Background
Caleberax was born into an ancient order dedicated to the service and protection of the descendants of Nimue, the Lady of the Lake. Each member of the order bears the same name, after the original protector of Nimue himself. For centuries, Caleberax trained alongside his fellow brothers and sisters of the order to become an elite warrior trained in various forms of armed and unarmed combat. Once his training was complete, Caleberax received his markings that are imbued with magic, allowing him to summon an arsenal of weapons at will. Eventually, Caleberax was assigned to protect a female descendant of Nimue, following the death of her previous protector, who fell in battle. Caleberax only served her for a short time before his failure ultimately resulted in her death. Consumed with guilt, Caleberax sought out her daughter, whom she had abandoned after birth in an effort to keep her safe from harm, in order to make up for his failures and redeem himself by protecting her daughter, Evie Woodes.
He eventually found her and secretly watched over her by means of his Shadow Cloak, which allowed him to hide within her shadow at all times and follow her wherever she went. He did not reveal himself to her until necessary to protect her from a troll assassin. After making himself known, Caleberax revealed to Evie the truth of her mother and her heritage as a descendant of Nimue. Though she was reluctant to accept these revelations as truth, Evie eventually accepted Caleberax as her protector despite his difficulties in understanding human culture and how he often interferes with her personal life in his desire to keep her safe. To avoid confusion with other members of his order, Evie nicknames him "Caleb".
